Arthur Whitelaw began his career in Show Business fifty years ago this June. Working his way through the ranks from an apprentice, kid actor, press agent, writer, director and producer to television executive. His first producing venture in the New York Theatre was the hit revival of "Best Foot Forward" which introduced Liza Minnelli and Christopher Walken to the stage.
Other original New York productions include: "You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown," "Butterflies Are Free," "Minnie's Boys," "70 Girls -70," "Strider," "The Taffetas," "Snoopy," "Sweet Sue," among others. Mr. Whitelaw co-wrote the books for and directed "Snoopy," and "The Taffetas." In film Mr. Whitelaw was vice president of Apjac International at Twentieth Century Fox, Apjac produced the musical screen versions of "Tom Sawyer," and "Huckleberry Finn." As head of Drama for HBO he originated a theatre series, that included the television versions of "Camelot," "Barefoot In the Park," "Plaza Suite," "Sherlock Holmes," "Separate Tables," "Vanities," "The Rainmaker," "Wait Until Dark," among others.
His productions have been nominated or won every industry award including the Oscar, Tony, Emmy, Ace, The Edgar, Obie, Drama Desk, etc.. Mr. Whitelaw has produced ten plays in London's West End and numerous television specials including "Charlie Brown," (Hallmark Hall of Fame) and "Celebrating Gershwin" (Great Performances and BBC). He has been on the Tony Administration Committee for the past twenty-five years and is a trustee of The American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
Now living in Coral Gables, Florida, Mr. Whitelaw is about to embark on his latest project - a new five hundred-seat theatre that will be part of the new Performing Arts complex in Miami. Under his non-profit American Musical Theatre Group, he will produce and develop new musicals. This summer he is directing a revival of his production of SNOOPY in London's Westend. |
